It’s springtime! That means it’s also time for a new seasonal beauty review! If you’re not familiar with these posts, this is a series where I review my favourite cruelty-free and natural beauty favourites that I’ve discovered in the last few months. I feel like I’ve been hitting a bit of a stride lately in the beauty department – my skin is the clearest it’s been in a while, my hair is finally coming out wavy and soft instead of frizzy, and I’m feel like I’ve got a good daily makeup routine down (let me know in the comments below if you want to know the products I use in my daily makeup look!). Honestly, I think some of these products have been a huge help in getting me back on my game.
Let’s get into the reviews!
This product is a little different because it works from the inside out. I originally purchased this before our trip to India, because someone had told me that it would help speed up recovery from food poisoning and parasites. We only used it once or twice, and when we came home I wasn’t sure what to do with all the leftover caps, so I just… took them (per the directions, of course). Flash forward a month or two and my digestion was the best it has been in years and I was free from my chronic (minor) eczema breakouts – what a miracle!
As it turns out, activated charcoal is used in clinical toxicology to enhance the elimination of toxic substances present in the body. Beyond its use in hospitals as an antidote for drugs and poisons, activated charcoal is an excellent remedy for detoxification, digestion issues, gas and bloating. This activated charcoal is odourless, tasteless and is derived from Canadian Wood beech, poplar tree and silver birch wood.
My skin is super sensitive, so I tend to have a lot of redness and blotchiness. That, partnered with the fact that I went through a (very unfortunate) period where I didn’t wear sunscreen on my face, means that I have quite a bit going on complexion-wise. I’ve was looking for a product that would help counteract this but is still all-natural, when I stumbled across Acure in my local health food store’s beauty section.
This Radical Resurfacing Treatment is a super gentle way to improve skin clarity and reduce the look of premature aging caused by sun exposure. It uses lemon probiotic, butterfly bush stem cells and poet’s daffodil to brighten the completion, even skin tone and diminish dullness. I’ve been using this product for a little over a month and so far I love it – I can definitely notice that my skin is brighter and more glow-y. I still have some redness, but I’m hoping that slowly but surely that will fade too. It seems like this is really helping to correct my sun damage without harsh ingredients or making it susceptible to more damage in the future.
My hair is dry, frizzy, and man, is there a lot of it. Because it can be so out of control, I generally opt to use a deep conditioner after every time I wash it. I have found that more natural options are really hit and miss and often either aren’t moisturizing enough or leave my hair feeling greasy. This conditioner by Davines is the perfect in-between. It leaves my hair silky, glossy and more resilient. The super light hydration lasts a forever, which I think is in part because this conditioner is packed with acai, rice and passiflora oils. I have definitely noticed that over the last few months it has helped to strengthen and repair my damaged hair (especially those pesky dry ends). I would definitely recommend it if you have thick, unruly dry or damaged hair that you need to get under control.
This pearlescent luminizer is so pretty and perfect for everyday use. I tap it on my brow and cheek bones for a brightened highlighting effect. I have used other highlighters that are overly pearlescent or shimmery and make me feel like I’m back in the 7th grade with glitter gel on my cheeks, but this product provides just the right amount of glow to get that overall dewy, healthy-looking radiance without looking overdone. Its entirely natural, creamy formula goes on sheer, catching and reflecting light to brighten the areas that the sun naturally hits for a subtle glow. It is also really hydrating, which means it will leave your skin looking plump and helps diminish the look of fine lines. The best part? Tata Harper is certified by Leaping Bunny and the American Vegetarian Association AND is a PETA caring consumer company – so cool!
As I approach 30, I’ve noticed some sings of aging that I have never had to deal with before. A new gray hair or little line seems topop up every time that I look in the mirror. I was recently asking a friend who is a little older than I am what her secret is to her perfectly youthful skin. Her secret? Suncreen. She’s been using a facial moisturizer with sunblock in it since she was a teenager. I on the other hand? Let’s just say I’ve been a little negligent in doing making sure I’m getting the coverage my skin needs. After that conversation I made a commitment to never leave the house without facial sunscreen on. The only problem – normal sunscreens make me break out like crazy or irritate my super sensitive skin.
This multi-benefit balm is everything that I need in a facial sunscreen. It provides broad spectrum protection with a natural, sheer mineral tint for perfect coverage in one easy step. I wear it either alone or under make-up and find that it hydrates my skin really well and doesn’t make me break out at all. This cream’s sun protection comes from 20.0% zinc oxide, one of the safest and most effective active sunscreen ingredients. It’s super smooth and creamy, and melts into skin easily. The added vitamin C also helps to repair previous sun damage and brighten hyperpigmentation – the perfect combination for reversing and preventing sun damage!
Ricky and I have gotten really into adding essential oils to our aromatherapy diffuser lately, and this is hands-down our favourite scent. Eucalyptus is perfect for helping promote relaxation and clearing the mind, and also promotes the feeling of of clear breathing. It is also a natural antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory oil, which makes it great for respiratory problems like colds, coughs, asthma, and congestion. A perfect option if you’re looking to use an atomizer to add a nice, relaxing scent to your home.
And there you have it – my Spring 2017 cruelty-free and natural beauty favourites. Let me know in the comments below if you have tried any of these products or if there are any others that you love for spring!
