You may not be able to tell from most of my social media, but I am a total natural beauty product junkie.
When I started moving towards living a healthier lifestyle, I also started trying to source mostly vegan and cruelty-free products and was pretty quickly drawn to seeking out makeup, hair and skincare brands that are more on the natural side. After a little researching, I stumbled across some info on just how much garbage and chemicals there are in most drugstore brands and in no time I was sourcing out and testing alternatives that were better for my health, the environment, the animals etc. etc.
Here’s the thing, though: some natural beauty products are mediocre at best. Fortunately for me, there are some brands out that make unbelievable options that are 10 times more effective than their mainstream counterpart. Unfortunately for my wallet, though, it takes a lot of trying out the duds to find products that are simultaneously natural, cruelty-free, gentle on my sensitive skin AND perform well. It turns out that is a bit of a tall order.
It occurred to me recently that I may as well start sharing my favourite makeup, hair and self-care products on here so that you guys can be in the loop as to which brands are both good for your sexy bod and work really well!
Over the last few months, I’ve fallen totally in love with the following natural (vegan!!) beauty products:
- Andalou Naturals Hair Styling Cream – $16.62 CAD
This shit is the bomb. I have super thick, dry, frizzy hair that can get puffy if there is even a whiff of humidity. Needless to say, living in the Pacific Northwest doesn’t exactly make it easy for me to keep that baby in check. I don’t like using heavy hair products like gel and mousse, so this styling cream is a perfect option. It doesn’t weigh my hair down, moisturizes and also provides heat protection for when I fell like I want to put in some effort (lol).
- RMS Beauty Eye Polish – Imagine – $36.45 CAD
My daily makeup routine, while simple, involves adding a just little bit of eyeshadow to give my lids to give them some shape. Recently, I had a small eczema breakout around my eye area (the result of using some shitty quality liquid liner) and consequently had to look for some new shadow new that was both ultra gentle and moisturizing. I have used other RMS products in the past and tbh I wasn’t the biggest fan, but because their line is so natural, I thought that I would give the coconut oil-based eye polish a try. This stuff is not only super gentle, but it’s crazy easy to apply and the moody dark purple looks really cool and slightly goth in a not-too-over-the-top way (which the internet tells me is a makeup trend this season). Needless to say, I’m totally in love.
- Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Sake (also available at Sephora) – $26.00 CAD
I love a good nude lip, but I always seem to have a hard time finding a shade that suits me. This lipstick is perfect for all my pink and freckly girls out there. If you’re not of the ginger persuasion like me, don’t fret – Bite has almost 40 shades in this creamy product, so you’re sure to find a colour that will look friggin’ bomb on you. I love Bite’s lip products because they’re made with food-grade ingredients including tons of natural oils. This makes them super moisturizing. They also provide great coverage and have really good staying power. Winning.
- Pacifica Stunning Brows Eyebrow Gloss and Set in Golden Brown – $18.50 CAD
Obviously, shapely thick brows are super in style right now. I, however, seem to always be the most struggs in this department and have a really hard time getting my spindly, asymmetrical, weird af brows under control. I love Pacifica’s products and have used quite a few of their other cosmetics in the past, so when I stumbled upon their brow gloss recently I couldn’t help but give it a try. This products sets your brows so that they don’t stick out every which way, and also makes them appear fuller and thicker (without the stress of having to pencil them in). I use it during the week when I just need something quick to slick on before I run out the door.
- Sibu Beauty Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil, 10 ml – $18.14 CAD
I originally purchased this facial oil after reading that sea buckthorn oil can help soothe eczema as well as smooth out skin tone and texture. As I mentioned, my skin is super sensitive and will flare up at the first sign of stress/naughty food/red wine/pretty much anything. Using this oil, however, seems to help soothe my breakouts and make them heal much more quickly. The anti-aging benefits don’t hurt it’s appeal much, either! It’s pretty pricey so I just dab a drop or two around my eye area/wherever my eczema is flaring up and watch all my problems slowly fadeee awayyyyy.
- Sukin Organic Supergreens Detox Facial Scrub – $12.99 CAD
I LOVE this product. I love this brand, for that matter. Their stuff is cheap, it works so well and it is super clean/free of nasties. I like using a gentle facial scrub once every day or so to help keep my skin clear and this scrub is the best natural option I have come across (by far). It uses micro jojoba beads and ground bamboo to gently polish away dead cells and is packed with soothing antioxidants and oils. It feels amazing, smells fresh and is really effective. I generally alternate between this and the Sukin Sensitive Cleansing Gel, which I’ve found makes for effective cleansing routine that keeps my acne at bay without flaring up my eczema. I would call that a win, wouldn’t you?
